Software Engineer (AWS / Ruby on Rails)- job post Energex Inc
Job Description
Overview
Energex Inc. is a Vancouver-based smart thermostat and building automation company. Our Dream Thermostat and HVAC energy management systems help hotels and commercial properties across the US and Canada cut energy use through occupancy sensing and cloud-based controls. We are a small, hands-on team, and we are looking for a Software Engineer to take ownership of the cloud platform behind our products.
This is a rare high-ownership role. Rather than being one small cog in a large engineering org, you will own the backend services, APIs, and AWS infrastructure that connect our thermostats to our cloud dashboard. You will work across the full stack, from device connectivity and telemetry pipelines to the customer-facing dashboard and third-party integrations, and you will see the direct impact of your work on real customers.
Our platform is built on Ruby on Rails and AWS. Rails experience is an asset, but we are open to strong engineers from other backend stacks (Django, Node, Laravel, etc.) who can ramp up quickly. What matters most is that you are comfortable owning a system end to end and thinking practically about reliability and security.
We offer structured onboarding and product training so you develop a deep understanding of Energex systems, including our cloud dashboard, occupancy sensors, and HVAC integrations.
Why This Role
Real ownership. You own the platform. Your decisions shape the architecture as we grow.
Breadth. You will touch backend, cloud infrastructure, IoT device connectivity, and product. Ideal for an engineer who wants to broaden their skill set, not narrow it.
Direct impact and a short path from idea to production. No layers of bureaucracy.
Flexibility. We offer flexible hours and a hybrid arrangement.
Growth. As the company grows, this role grows with it.
Responsibilities
Build, maintain, and improve the backend services that power the Energex cloud platform
Own and improve our AWS infrastructure, including compute, storage, networking, monitoring, and cost management
Develop and maintain APIs for device communication, the customer dashboard, and external integrations
Build and operate data pipelines for telemetry from thermostats and occupancy sensors
Support IoT device connectivity and provisioning across our installed fleet
Help keep the platform secure, reliable, and available, in line with our SOC 2 program
Troubleshoot production issues and support field deployments
Collaborate with our operations and support teams to turn customer needs into product
Continuously improve code quality, tooling, and internal engineering processes
Required Skills & Qualifications
2-3 years building and shipping production web applications
Hands-on AWS experience (e.g. EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, VPC, CloudWatch)
Solid understanding of relational databases, API design, and backend architecture
Comfortable owning code and infrastructure end to end, including deployments
Strong problem-solving ability with a proactive, self-directed mindset
Good communication skills and the ability to work independently in a small team
Adaptable and eager to grow in a fast-moving company
Nice to Have
Ruby on Rails experience (our stack), or a track record of picking up new stacks quickly
IoT or connected-device experience (MQTT, device provisioning, OTA updates)
