Our Occupational Health and Safety department is looking for an experienced Safety and Healthy Work Environment Specialist to help the prevention of injuries to all workers and to promote health and well-being for our employees. This position will support programs such as the musculoskeletal injury reduction program, WHMIS/GHS and other healthcare hazard prevention strategies and initiatives. The Safety and Healthy Work Environment Specialist will also support health and well-being initiatives focused on health education, health promotion opportunities for employees to enhance their personal health and well-being and improve the overall health of the Humber River Health workforce. This individual will administer safety and healthy work environment programs that promote and facilitate the safety and well-being of our patients, staff and volunteers, while ensuring legislative compliance.

Reporting Relationship: Director, Occupational Health and Safety
Location - Wilson Site (primary)
Hours of Work: 37.5/week
Employee Group: Non-union

Position Responsibilities:
Monitor the effectiveness of hospital policies and processes in meeting industry targets/benchmarks by preparing a variety of reports related to OHS programs and processes
Collect and analyze quality and outcome indicators
Design, develop, implement and sustain Safety and Healthy Work Environment programs including those that promote regular attendance and avoidance of workplace injuries
Communicate and market program availability to employees at all Humber River Health locations
Develop employee and volunteer safety education and training programs
Foster the development and maintenance of a safe and supportive workplace culture for employees and volunteers
Assist in the development and implementation of specific action plans to proactively address key safety and healthy work environment opportunities
Prepare evidence-based statistical reports as required for internal and external stakeholders
Develop and apply metrics to assess the impact of safety and healthy work environment programs
Collaborate and liaise with other members of the Occupational Health and Safety team
Maintain and respect confidential information
Maintain training records and distribution of staff compliance reports related to legislative programs
Maintain the requirements of the WHMIS/GHS program to comply with regulations including conducting training programs and on-site audits
Administer the online SDS Database Management Systems (Wellnet)
Support the development of a compliance, evidence-based monitoring report (based on Health and Safety Scorecard) that reports to required stakeholders

Safety
Support, promote, recommend and assist with the ongoing development and improvement of various Occupational Health and Safety programs
Support the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee and sub-committees/task forces (i.e. Healthy Workplace Committee, Violence Free Task Force)
Identify and investigate safety issues, accidents and incidents to discover root causes, reconcile conflicting information and determine solutions to achieve the right outcome
Plan, implement and coordinate environmental tests (e.g. ergonomic assessments, physical space safety)
Develop, implement and promote accreditation safety standards for hospital area, staff and patients
Research evidence-based and current best practice safety initiatives
Support the planning, coordination and execution of healthy work environment programs in collaboration with the Healthy Workplace Committee, Occupational Health and Safety and Human Resources
Coordinate group programs and workshops to address employee health issues such as back care programs, healthy weight, fitness, cardiovascular health, nutritional health, mental health, medication, substance use
Create and sustain internal/external support networks to foster health and well-being awareness and commitment to a positive, people centered workplace with excellent staff engagement
Develop creative strategies to enroll and engage people to take responsibility for their well being

Qualifications:
A Baccalaureate Degree in Healthcare, Nursing or other related discipline
5 years experience administering safety and individual health and well-being programs
Membership with a regulated health professional association (e.g. Nursing, Kinesiology, Physiotherapy) - membership in good standing
Membership with the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) preferred
Exceptional analytical and information seeking skills with the ability to use the information and statistics to draw evidence-based conclusions and formulate actionable policies
Experience working in a fast-paced, multi-site, multi-disciplinary healthcare environment
Knowledge of current worker health and safety legislation (e.g. Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Health Care and Residential Facilities Regulation)
Sound knowledge of the principles of Safety and Healthy Work Environment management
Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders with proven facilitation and coaching skills
Self-directed, courageous and highly motivated to drive high-quality, safe programs
