Intent of the process

Immediate need: 3 full time permanent (indeterminate) positions. A pool of qualified and/or partially qualified candidates may be established and used to fill similar positions on a temporary or permanent basis. In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, and there is a temporary need, they may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

• Possession of a valid class 5 Manitoba driver’s license or another provincial/territorial equivalent.
• Ability and willingness to work overtime, including evenings and weekends during peak periods.
• Ability and willingness to travel within province with the occasional overnight trips.
• Ability and willingness to work in a laboratory environment for extended periods of time while standing and under normal safety precautions.
• Ability and willingness to work with toxic chemicals and other hazardous material using proper personal protective equipment.
• Ability and willingness to perform repetitive actions such as pipetting.
• Known allergies must be controlled through personal protective equipment and/or medication and must not impinge on the duties to be performed.
• With appropriate safety precautions in place, ability and willingness to work in laboratory, greenhouse and/or field environments for extended periods at a time.
• Ability and willingness to work outdoors under various weather conditions.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work activities, including moderate to heavy manual work such as moving or lifting objects up to 25 kg.

Operational Requirements
• Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally on occasion (e.g. training purposes).
• Ability and willingness to lift up to 25 kg.

Your application must clearly explain how you meet the following
Education
• Secondary school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Experience
• Experience providing technical support in a laboratory environment, scheduling lab activities and coordinating multiple experimental plans.
• Experience operating, maintaining and calibrating basic and complex laboratory instrumentation.
• Experience managing and analyzing data generated from experimental treatments using a variety of software packages, including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, SAS, JMP, R, and other statistical analysis tools.
• Experience in processing of cereal grains, pulses, oil seeds or other agri-food products.

Knowledge
• Knowledge of grain components including: carbohydrates, proteins, oil and minor components.
• Knowledge of instruments used for wet chemistry such as, but not limited to, pH meter, centrifuge, spectrophotometer, liquid chromatography (HPLC/UPLC), gas chromatography, mass spectrometer and near infrared analyser.
• Knowledge of laboratory methodologies, tools, and principles related to analysis of grains and agri-food products.

Abilities
• Ability to evaluate and interpret analytical results and prepare a summary of results.
• Ability to prepare chemical solutions.
• Ability to perform standard laboratory procedures.
