About us
About the Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy at UCL is one of the leading philosophy departments in the UK. In the 2021 REF, 60% of our overall profile received the top grade (4*), the highest of any UK philosophy department.

We offer several undergraduate degree programmes. Undergraduate first- and second-year modules largely involve a weekly one/hour lecture plus a one-hour seminar; third year modules usually consist of a weekly two-hour seminar.

We offer taught master’s programmes, and a prestigious research master’s and PhD. Master’s-level modules usually consist of a weekly two-hour seminar.

The department has great advantages as a centre of research activity. The extraordinary number of research seminars, talks and lectures that take place in the various London colleges, the Institute of Philosophy in the University of London, the Institute of Classical Studies, the Aristotelian Society and the Royal Institute of Philosophy, all offer a wealth of opportunities.

About the Research Project

The Spontaneity of Freedom is a research project selected by the ERC and funded by UKRI studying the nature of spontaneous freedom–the freedom of acting in unplanned and unscripted ways–and its implications for ethics, politics, law, and technology.

About the role
Dr Jonathan Gingerich, the Principal Investigator, is seeking to appoint a part-time Research Assistant to work on the Spontaneity of Freedom Project. The details of these duties will be assigned by Dr. Gingerich. This will involve work on organising an academic seminar series, organising annual workshops on topics related to spontaneity, corresponding with project contributors, and carrying out research on a range of topics that may include phenomenology, ethics, political philosophy, and/or aesthetics. This post is available immediately for up to thirty-nine months in the first instance.

About you
The postholder will hold a degree in Philosophy or a closely related field and will demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. They will bring a strong aptitude for, and commitment to, high-quality research, with the ability to work collaboratively in a research environment while working to short deadlines. The postholder will also possess strong interpersonal skills and intellectual breadth, enabling them to engage effectively with complex ideas and a range of colleagues.

What we offer
