Description

Locations: Nunavut and Ottawa

Join an award-winning journalism team making a difference in Canada’s North. Nunatsiaq News is the newspaper of record for the Eastern Arctic. Serving 39 communities and 60,000 readers a week with its website and print edition, Nunatsiaq News continues to grow its readership, web visits and advertising. We provide credible, in-depth and award-winning journalism, which draws readers from the North, southern Canada and around the world.

Job description
We have two openings for determined journalists who are hungry to break the news that affects our readers.

We are looking for a skilled interviewer with a strong writing and reporting background, who pays close attention to detail and deadlines. The job requires a combination of hard-news writing (city hall, crime, and court) as well as feature writing and profile writing.

You are self-reliant, adaptable and used to working in a fast-paced multimedia environment of print, web and social media. Strong photography skills and social-media savvy are assets.

We are currently looking for one candidate who will be based in Iqaluit or another community in Nunavut. We have another opening for a remote reporter based in Ottawa, who will also cover news about the North. For the right candidate, we would consider someone who could work remotely but who has the desire to travel in the North.

We cover groundbreaking developments in government, culture, language and society.

The ideal candidate would understand the North, the northern way of life, traditions and institutions. Because our coverage area is multilingual, being fluent in Inuktitut or French would be also be considered an asset. Experience covering courts, police and breaking news is also an asset.

This position should appeal to either a newsroom veteran looking for a new challenge by putting her or his skills to work in a demanding environment, or to a young reporter eager to gain experience quickly.

We have some flexibility for the right candidate in terms of start date, working remotely and working from home.

Applicants from all Nunavut communities are encouraged to apply. Remote candidates will also be considered.

Salary commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Managing Editor, you would:
File at least five news stories per week, as well as news briefs as required and at least one feature every two weeks.
File at least one story per day for nunatsiaq.com.
Provide or source two standalone photos for the publication each week.
Develop sources, generate new story ideas and participate in story meetings.
Assist in broadening the editorial content of Nunatsiaq News to encourage a greater readership.
Travel to communities in Nunavut to report on special events as required.
Attend after-hours meetings and events as required.
Ensure that stories are filed on deadline and accompanied by a photo.
Assist with proofreading dummy newspaper pages.
Perform other related duties and assignments as directed by the editors.
Qualifications

A journalism degree/diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Equivalent storytelling or writing experience gained in other work or life experience would be considered.
Strong interviewing, writing, reporting, photography and social media skills.
Organizational skills and a proven track record of meeting deadlines and breaking your own stories.
Ability to work independently, but also work well with others as part of a team.
A driver's licence.
