This position will require the appointed applicant to undertake representation of children including undertaking children's court duty lawyer. As a reThe Refugee Advice and Casework Service (RACS) seeks a dedicated person to join its team of committed human rights lawyers as a Practical Legal Trainee (students undertaking a course for admission as a lawyer). There are multiple positions available at our Randwick and outreach office in Auburn.

Your responsibilities will include legal and country information research, drafting statements, observing and assisting with client appointments, accompanying lawyers to client meetings and DoHA interviews and various other legal and administrative tasks.

You will have had previous volunteer experience and be able to demonstrate a commitment to human rights and social justice, an understanding of the issues that affect people seeking asylum, and a capacity to problem-solve.

You will have administrative and organisational experience and have the ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders in a confident and a respectful manner.

You will also need initiative and a sense of humour. In return, we offer you a vibrant and supportive working environment, and a range of experiences in a community legal centre. You will also receive on-the-job training and supervision.

Please note, these are unpaid positions.

Requirements: You must be enrolled in, or about to enrol in the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. You must be available for a minimum of 3 days a week for a minimum of 60 days. sult, if not already accredited, the successful applicant will be required to achieve Childrens Court Duty Lawyer accreditation as a priority upon commencement in the role. The successful candidate will play an integral role in the following: Provide legal information and advice to clients and the public. Provide duty lawyer services in the Magistrates and Children's Courts and appear on higher court call-overs and mentions. Help the principal lawyer to supervise legal work and develop the legal skills of, train and guide staff within the team, Legal Aid Queensland lawyers state-wide and also external legal practitioners, regarding criminal law and related matters. Support Legal Aid Queensland's contributions to policy, procedure, law reform and legal service delivery initiatives. Help in initiating and maintaining networks with relevant bodies in the criminal justice system and liaise with key criminal justice system stakeholders. About You: You have extensive experience in the conduct of summary and indictable criminal law matters and related areas of law, including preparation, representation and advocacy experience. You have a detailed knowledge of the practice and procedure of criminal law, evidence and ethics and are able to provide advice on and contribute to changes in policies, procedures and systems. You are also committed to self-development and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the criminal law and procedure. You contribute to the professional development of others including, providing clear guidance, constructive feedback and mentoring. You present and write in a clear, concise and articulate manner. You can offer convincing rationale and negotiate persuasively. You tailor your communication style to the audience and communicate effectively with both external stakeholders and also clients with complex needs.
