Position Purpose

The Memorial Guide serves as the first point of contact for visitors to the Elks National Memorial and Headquarters Building. This role is responsible for creating a welcoming experience, sharing information about the Elks and the building, and supporting daily front desk operations.

This position is especially well-suited for individuals who enjoy connecting with others, sharing knowledge, and being part of a welcoming, community-oriented environment.

Essential Responsibilities

Visitor Engagement & Tours
• Welcome visitors and provide a positive first impression
• Share information about the history of the Elks and the Memorial Building
• Answer visitor questions and occasionally provide guided tours (many tours are self-guided)

Front Desk & Building Operations
• Monitor the front desk and security cameras
• Open and close front doors and metal gates daily
• Maintain awareness of building activity and visitor flow

Administrative Support
• Perform light office tasks such as updating spreadsheets and preparing mailings

Education & Experience

Required
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Friendly, outgoing, and professional demeanor
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented
• Basic computer skills

Preferred
• Interest in history, art, or architecture
• Experience in customer service, hospitality, education, or public-facing roles

• Comfortable engaging with a wide range of visitors

Position Details
• Employment Type: Part-Time, Seasonal (April 13 – November 14)
• Work Hours: 11:45 AM – 4:15 PM (Monday–Saturday; some flexibility based on availability)
• Location: Chicago, IL (CTA accessible – Brown Line and bus routes nearby)
• Compensation: $18-$20/hour

• This role sometimes includes downtime between visitors, allowing for quiet activities such as reading, studying, or other seated hobbies
