Job Description Summary

The Learning Designer is responsible for planning, developing, assessing and delivering educational programs and courses. The position provides academic, curricular and instructional designing services for academic or non-academic learning initiatives in the Faculty of Education in an online and hybrid environment. The incumbent will develop and manage the assigned projects from proposals to readiness for course delivery.

Organizational Status

The Learning Design Digital Innovation (LDDI) unit offers educational services to advance scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching, learning, curriculum and educational technology practices. The Learning Designer reports to the Manager, Learning Design. The selected candidate will work closely with the faculty and staff members, sessional instructors, external clients, development teams and other departments and agencies on and off the UBC campus. The selected candidate will be part of a team that will design, develop, revise and support Faculty of Education blended and online programs and courses.

Work Performed

Works collaboratively with the Learning Design Digital Innovation team to provide learning design expertise to academic units and instructors to plan, design and develop educational experiences;
Provides learning design consultation in learning content development;
Assists instructors and subject matter experts with course design and creation, and implementation of educational technologies for classroom, distance and hybrid learning course offerings, following the principles of Universal Design of Learning (UDL), including accessibility standards and regulations;
Develops and writes new sections for materials where expertise is appropriate;
Liaises with faculty, course authors and external clients in the development of educational courses, programs and related materials;
Develops learning materials to train faculty and staff as required in the use of educational technologies in online and hybrid instructional environments;
Provides leadership, expertise and training in learning design for distributed learning materials and methods for the programs and courses supported;
Prepares long range plans for the delivery of educational programming;
Conducts learning design research and analysis;
Makes decisions impacting program and curriculum design;
Initiates research projects related to the design and efficacy of hybrid and distributed learning materials and methods within the various programs supported;
May assist with video and media production;
In collaboration with other members of the LDDI team, shares in the identification, implementation, and evaluation of strategic goals for FoE programs and initiatives;
Works on other special projects as may be assigned;
Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in judgment may result in the inefficient use of resources, and may damage the image and reputation of the University, and the Learning Design Digital Innovation unit. As a service unit in the Faculty of Education, the consequence of staff error could negatively impact the reputation of the Faculty for quality and reliability and affect the enrollment of students. Difficulties in exercise of judgment, due-diligence and communication will be detrimental to the LDDI unit.

Supervision Received

Works independently under the general direction of the Manager, Learning Design. Receives general instructions during orientation and on new projects or changes in procedures. The work is done independently, although the general product will be subject to review in terms of quality and effectiveness in meeting educational goals.

Supervision Given

Provides input to course developers, faculty, students and department representatives with regard to academic functions. Contributes to projects or/and development team of varying composition, depending on the scope and nature of the specific project. Project teams may include University faculty and staff, students, colleagues within LDDI and specialist staff hired for specific tasks. May manage students or staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications
A Bachelor degree in Education or in Educational Technology, Distance Education, Educational Psychology, is preferred;
Minimum four years of relevant experience in the design and development of educational materials delivered at a distance and use of instructional media, or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
Knowledge of the university working environment and experience in the development of educational programs will be considered assets;
Excellent knowledge of online course development in a post-secondary environment is desirable;
Excellent knowledge of learning design and technologies, curriculum and course development methods and research, and pedagogical practices in online teaching and learning, and UDL principles;
Excellent knowledge of interface design, web-based resources, multimedia technologies, and learning management systems;
Excellent project management and technical skills;
Advanced user and/or familiar with a wide variety of applications and software including Adobe Suite;
Strong academic and writing skills;
Excellent detail skills are required, including the ability to edit complex text material accurately;
Capacity for innovation, idea generation, research, and project management;
An understanding of academic culture and the nature of adult learning;
A balance of creative, technical, analytical and social/interpersonal skills will be an asset;
Ability to work well with others, demonstrated effective intercultural communication skills, and the ability to deal professionally and diplomatically with faculty, staff, students and the general public;
Ability to adjust to change and to work well under pressure to tight timelines in team environments. Read more
