Local Title: LEAD REFRIGERATION MECHANIC
State Title: HVAC MECHANIC
JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB GOAL:
To provide leadership and skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of refrigeration equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited high school or trade school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Four (4) years field experience in the repair of commercial refrigeration equipment. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Possession of a valid Universal Refrigerant Certification – Types I, II and III.
Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools commonly utilized in the repair and service of refrigeration equipment. Knowledge of basic air conditioning/heating systems and pneumatic and electric controls. Skilled in the use of a wide range of tools and shop equipment. Ability to plan and prioritize work and assign duties. Ability to estimate time and materials for jobs. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions of the trade. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.

SUPERVISES:
N/A
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Overhaul and service refrigeration equipment.
Repair, replace and adjust worn parts on condensers, compressors, water or vacuum pumps.
Test refrigeration equipment for leaks and make repairs in accordance with EPA standards.
Repair and adjust valves, piping connections, fittings and couplings.
Adjust expansion valves, adjust or change belts and replace gaskets as necessary.
Remove, install or rebuild motors, thermostats and other controls.
Service refrigerators, freezers, coolers (including water coolers) and HVAC equipment for dry food storage areas.
Plan and prioritize work and assign duties.
Estimate time and materials for jobs.
Maintain records on refrigerant usage and recovery for the department.
Keep department heads informed on status of work in progress or completed.
Maintain good preventive maintenance program for the equipment in the District.
Maintain accurate records of daily work and time and payroll information.
Follow safety standards in performing work and report unsafe conditions to Manager/Supervisor in a timely manner.
May be required to return to work after hours and/or weekends.
Travel outside of Manatee County as required in the performance of duties.
Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The employee is exposed to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The employee frequently will work irregular or extended work hours while performing the duties of this job. The employee regularly is required to lift, hold, carry, sit, stand, walk, climb crawl, bend, stoop, apply finger dexterity, grasp, feel, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear, and rely on visual acuity. The noise level in the work environment can be high at times. Safety is the highest priority.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
