Lead Engineer (Design Manager) – Energy Sector

Leap29 are representing an engineering consultancy delivering design, planning, and project management services across the full project life cycle. With a strong focus on technical excellence and sustainability, we support complex infrastructure projects for demanding clients across the energy sector.

This position Upstate NY. Rochester/Albany/White Plains.

Our work spans renewable energy, power infrastructure, and energy-intensive facilities, combining practical engineering expertise with a collaborative, solutions-driven approach.

The Role

As part of our continued growth in the U.S. energy market, our client are seeking a Lead Engineer (Manager) to establish and lead our technical design delivery capability.

This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced engineer who enjoys combining technical delivery with people management. You will be responsible for leading engineering design and coordination for renewable generation (solar, wind), BESS, transmission and distribution (T&D), and related energy infrastructure projects.

The role involves close collaboration with teams across multiple regions to ensure consistent technical standards, high-quality delivery, and the sharing of best practices.

Key Responsibilities
• Lead the technical design and execution of energy projects, ensuring compliance, quality, and cost-effective solutions.
• Build, mentor, and manage a team of engineers responsible for design development and documentation.
• Define and implement engineering processes, workflows, and quality assurance procedures for the U.S. Energy Business Unit.
• Provide technical leadership through design reviews, guidance, and mentoring of engineering staff.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams and support effective collaboration across offices.
• Partner with management and business development teams to plan staffing, workload, and resource needs.
• Serve as the primary technical point of contact for clients, utilities, and permitting authorities.
• Foster a collaborative, adaptable, and high-performance team culture.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum of 8 years of professional engineering experience, preferably within a Tier 1 or Tier 2 consultancy.
• Strong technical experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Solar PV, wind, and/or BESS projects
• Transmission and Distribution (T&D) substations and overhead/underground lines
• Data centers or other energy-intensive facilities
• Solid knowledge of U.S. electrical codes and standards (IEEE, NFPA 70 / NEC, etc.), with experience reviewing and approving designs.
• Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop engineering teams.
• Experience working with developers, utilities, EPC contractors, and permitting agencies.
• Ability to balance detailed technical work with leadership and management responsibilities.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in one or more U.S. states.
• Experience establishing or scaling an engineering team or office.
• Exposure to multi-office or international project delivery.
• Proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese.
