Junior Content Editor (journalist)
Job Description
Job title
Junior Content Editor
About Us
Part of Sports Publications, 18Players is a full-service creative agency specialising in sport. We create high-quality digital and print content for membership organisations, governing bodies, brands and venues, alongside services including design, web development, video, social media and campaign delivery.
Our roots are in golf, but our client work reaches across the wider sporting landscape.
Sports Publications also publish National Club Golfer, our established in-house golf media title (nationalclubgolfer.com).
The Opportunity
We are looking for a newly qualified or early-career journalist who wants to build a career in sport. You will join an experienced, collaborative team and work across a varied mix of client and editorial projects in a fast-moving environment.
This is a junior role with room to learn. You will receive support from experienced editors, writers, designers and digital specialists while gradually taking ownership of stories and projects. One day you might interview a leading figure in golf; the next you could write a digital feature, prepare magazine copy or help shape content for a major sporting organisation.
Responsibilities
Research, source and write accurate, engaging stories for 18Players clients and National Club Golfer across websites, magazines, newsletters and other channels
Interview people confidently in person, by phone and on video calls, and build a reliable network of contacts
Produce news stories, interviews, profiles, explainers and longer-form features to clear briefs and deadlines
Write and refine headlines, standfirsts, subheadings, cover lines, captions and promotional copy
Copy-edit and proofread your own work and colleagues' copy, checking facts, names, figures, links, spelling and grammar
Adapt your writing to different audiences, formats, client objectives and house styles without losing clarity or personality
Upload and format content in content management systems, including selecting images, adding links and applying basic search optimisation
Work closely with the production and design teams to source images, brief layouts and help take projects from initial idea to publication
Support commercial and client-led content, including advertorials, email copy and press releases, with appropriate editorial care
Contribute ideas in planning meetings and respond positively when priorities change or a story develops quickly
Input into podcasts, conducting research, sourcing and contacting contributors and identifying best angles from transcripts)
Why This Role Is Different
Few junior journalism roles offer this breadth. You will learn how an agency serves major sporting organisations while also developing the editorial instincts needed to contribute to a recognised consumer media brand. It is an opportunity to build a strong portfolio, understand different audiences and establish your career in sports content.
Key Skills
A recently completed journalism qualification, such as NCTJ, a journalism degree or equivalent practical training and experience
Strong writing, spelling and grammar, with a clear understanding of accuracy, fairness, media law and responsible journalism
A portfolio of published or assessed work. This can include student media, placements, local journalism, freelance work or personal projects
The curiosity and confidence to find stories, approach interviewees and ask good follow-up questions
The ability to write clean, lively copy to a brief and meet deadlines in a busy working environment
A collaborative attitude, sound judgement and willingness to accept feedback, learn quickly and help the wider team
Strong organisation and the ability to manage several pieces of work at different stages
A genuine interest in sport and sports media
Useful But Not Essential
An interest in or knowledge of golf. You do not need to be a golfer to work here – but it helps
Experience using WordPress or another content management system
A basic understanding of digital publishing, search optimisation, social media or audience analytics
Familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop or Acrobat
Experience gained through a newsroom placement, sports desk, student publication, freelance commission or content team
We are interested in potential as well as experience. If the role excites you but you do not meet every desirable criterion, we would still encourage you to apply.
