About HNZ
HNZ was established in 2022 as part of the integration process of the previous 20 District Health Boards and other related entities.

The organisation's aspiration is to provide timely and accessible healthcare services to the entire population of New Zealand.

HNZ manages the country's health system delivery on a daily basis, planning and commissioning services for all New Zealanders.

Our Scale
With an unprecedented scale within New Zealand, HNZ employs 85,000 full-time equivalent staff and has a significant annual revenue of $27 billion.

The organisation also manages an asset base of $16 billion.

Improving Performance
In July 2024, a Commissioner was appointed to restore HNZ's performance by improving patient access to healthcare services and financial discipline.

A system reset has been initiated to change the way HNZ operates, primarily to address patient waiting times for assessment and treatment.

This involves making changes to the flow of patients across the entire health system to promote timely access to all services.

New Operating Model
The new operating model includes moving away from a centralised model and devolving decision-making and resources to four regions across the country.

This will involve a greater degree of clinical involvement in key decision-making.
