The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
What Will You Do?
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Family Violence Prevention Unit.
Providing high quality and culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients in domestic and family violence, civil law, care and protection and family law and undertaking court responsibilities.
Communicating with, taking instructions from, and effectively representing Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander clients experiencing family and domestic violence who may present as distressed, have a physical or intellectual disability, or have problem behaviours such as drug or ******* addictions, when the legal concepts involved are complex and difficult for the client to understand.
Attending Duty Lawyer Services for domestic and family violence matters at designated local courts.
Deliver targeted community legal education and contribute to law reform submissions
Who Are We Looking For?
A Highly Skilled And Motivated Individual With a Thorough Understanding Of The Cultural, Social, And Historical Needs Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander People. You Will Be Able To Demonstrate
Legal qualifications and a current ACT Practising Certificate (or be able to obtain one immediately).
Understanding of the dynamics of family and domestic violence and its effect on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
Proven capacity to identify and understand legal issues facing socially and economically disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples.
Capacity and motivation to provide quality legal representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait people in communities.
Excellent written and oral communication skills combined with strong time management, legal research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
