With a newly appointed General Manager, we are seeking a highly experienced and strategic General Counsel to join our executive team to lead our legal function and provide expert advice across all areas of council operations. Reporting directly to the General Manager, this is a key leadership role ensuring that the organisation operates within a strong legal and governance framework.

About the role

The General Counsel will be integral in providing strategic direction, leadership, accountability and oversight of Council’s legal service. This new position is integral in providing legal strategy and services to meet the expectations of the Council, Executive Leadership team and staff related to legal, governance and risk matter to support sound decision making.

The General Counsel will also ensure that decisions, policies and operations comply with relevant legislation and to minimise legal and regulatory risk.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

A degree in Law
Admitted or eligibility for admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
Substantial legal experience, preferably in commercial, property, local government and/or planning law or experience as an in-house counsel or government lawyer.
Experience in the development of legal strategies and protocols.
Ability to contribute to policy development and change management decisions and implement action.
Superior interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to build trusted relationships and influence at all levels.
Proven ability to manage sensitive issues with discretion, confidentiality, and political acumen.
High-level analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on outcomes and innovation.
Well-developed analytical thinking, creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

Salary range:

Your skills will be recognised with an attractive salary package of around $270k (including super).
