Furniture Designer – Technical & Bespoke Design
Job Description
Experience: 3–6 years
Location: Mumbai
Industry: Interior Design / Furniture / Hospitality / Residential Projects
Employment: Full-time
About the Role
We are looking for a Furniture Designer with strong technical drawing capabilities and hands-on experience in designing modular as well as bespoke furniture.
This is not purely a conceptual design role. The person should be able to take a furniture idea from design intent → detailed technical drawings → material specification → vendor coordination → production → final execution.
Experience working on premium residential and hospitality projects is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
• Design custom and bespoke furniture including sofas, beds, wardrobes, consoles, dining tables, side tables, storage units, vanities, bars and other interior furniture.
• Develop detailed production-ready technical drawings with accurate dimensions, sections, elevations, joinery and construction details.
• Design and detail modular furniture systems, particularly wardrobes, kitchens, storage and cabinetry.
• Translate design concepts/reference images into technically executable furniture designs.
• Understand and specify materials including:
Solid wood and veneers
Plywood/MDF
Laminates
Metal
Stone
Glass
Upholstery and fabrics
Hardware and fittings
• Prepare material specifications, finishes and hardware schedules.
• Coordinate directly with carpenters, furniture manufacturers, workshops and vendors.
• Resolve technical and production issues during prototyping/manufacturing.
• Review shop drawings and ensure that the finished product matches the approved design.
• Coordinate with interior designers, stylists, architects, project managers and site teams.
• Conduct site measurements where required and incorporate site conditions into drawings.
• Maintain drawing revisions and proper documentation across projects.
Technical Skills Required
Must have:
• AutoCAD – advanced proficiency
• Strong furniture technical detailing
• Excellent understanding of furniture construction and joinery
• Modular furniture detailing
• Bespoke furniture development
• Ability to produce vendor/manufacturing-ready drawings
• Strong understanding of dimensions, ergonomics and proportions
• Material and hardware knowledge
Preferred:
• SketchUp
• Photoshop / Illustrator
• Enscape / V-Ray or similar visualization software
• Experience developing furniture for luxury/premium interiors
Who We’re Looking For
Someone who is equally comfortable designing a beautiful piece of furniture and figuring out exactly how it will be made.
The ideal candidate has worked closely with workshops and manufacturers—not just created drawings from a desk. They should understand what happens when a drawing reaches the factory floor and be able to anticipate construction, material and execution challenges.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s/Diploma in Furniture Design, Interior Design, Product Design, Architecture or related discipline
• 3–6 years of relevant professional experience
• Portfolio demonstrating technical furniture drawings and executed furniture pieces
• Prior experience with hospitality and/or premium residential projects preferred
• Experience working with furniture vendors/manufacturers is important
What we will evaluate during hiring
Candidates should be prepared to show both design portfolio + technical drawing samples. We would specifically evaluate their ability to take one bespoke furniture reference/concept and develop a complete production-ready drawing set.
Important:
This role is best suited to someone who enjoys the intersection of design, detailing, materials, and making, not someone looking for a purely conceptual interior-design position.
