About the role

The Finance Business Partner plays a vital role in delivering expert financial analysis, overseeing budget management, and providing strategic advice. This role focuses on cost control and collaboration with technical teams to support financial aspects of key capital projects.

You will work closely with project teams, including engineers and consultants to develop, monitor, and manage budgets while delivering accurate financial reports and analysis and forecasts. . You will be responsible for reviewing costs, submitting claims and conducting variation analyses to ensure projects remain financially on track. Additionally you will assist with the submission of claims and engage with grant funders to discuss funding and compliance matters.

Stepping into this role, you will deliver a range of project management and financial services to meet council's cost management, claim submission, statutory and reporting requirements.

As the Finance Business Partner, your main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Collaborating with the allocated Executive and department heads to develop, monitor, and manage budgets.
Assist engineers and project managers in preparing capital claims, tracking project costs, and ensuring alignment with budgetary goals.
Review project costs and submit claims accurately and efficiently to meet financial and regulatory requirements.
Submit claims and discuss funding compliance, progress, and requirements with grant funders.
Analyse project variations and provide detailed reports with insights and recommendations for corrective actions.
Support the preparation of the annual budget and review processes, including performance reporting.
Prepare monthly management report for management, including budget comparisons, variance analysis, and commentaries.
Developing regular financial forecasts and updating projections based on actual performance and emerging trends.
Implement cost control measures to ensure financial discipline and prevent budget overruns.
Foster strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
What We're Looking For

We need someone who shares our values of One, Respect, Accountability, Courage, and Resilience. The ideal candidate will have:

Possession of Bachelor-level qualifications in Business or Commerce (Accounting).
Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA Australia) or Chartered Accountant (Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia) would be highly regarded.
Experience in financial management, cost control, and providing financial support for projects.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Strong organisational skills, with the ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, and support multiple projects simultaneously.
Demonstrated understanding of the issues impacting Torres Strait Islander people together with the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively.
Other Requirements

The preferred candidate may be required to apply for a National Police Certificate before appointment.
