External Manager - Parliament, Media and Community Adviser (EOB)​

The office of ​Jerome Laxale MP, Federal Member for Bennelong​ is seeking applications for a ​full time, ongoing External Manager - Parliament, Media and Community and Adviser, based in Epping NSW with travel to Canberra and other locations as required.

Position Overview

The External Manager to the Member for Bennelong is responsible for the Member’s outward reach and activity and supports the Member in his role in the Electorate and in Parliament. The role is supported by multiple permanent and non-permanent staff to assist in fulfilling below key responsibilities:

The key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

● Provision of parliamentary support to the Member, including accompanying the Member as a nominated traveller when required.

● Development and management of communication and engagement strategies, including social media, email newsletters, flyers, direct mail, and petitions.

● Management and delivery of media opportunities while developing professional relationships with local, regional and national media.

● Management of CALD Engagement and Parliamentary Committee activities, including oversight of dedicated support staff encompassing employment engagement and cessation, training, day-to-day supervision, and performance management.

● Working with the Internal Manager to allocate casual and administrative staff and volunteers for support.

● Provide strategic advice on the electorate and local issues.

● Proactively reporting and briefing the Member on positive developments, areas of concern and emerging risks/issues across responsibilities.

● Manage community outreach visits, events and direct voter contact.

● Working with Internal the Manager to optimise and develop processes to achieve strategic outcomes.

● Participation in event and community activities where required.

● Responsible for the growth of local volunteer base and continued engagement.

● Fulfill other duties as required to support the Member and the effective operation of the Electorate and Parliamentary Office.

The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience:

● Ability to communicate effectively and liaise with electorate offices and the community, including varied constituencies.

● Experience in the processes of planning, organising and implementing responsibilities of the role.

● Demonstrated experience in working in a high-pressure environment as part of a team.

● Sound knowledge of the political process and the Australian parliamentary and political system.

● Demonstrated capacity for applying analytical and problem-solving skills in developing solutions for complex issues.

● Ability to rapidly acquire a sound knowledge of the structure and functions of the Member’s responsibilities.

● Proven reliability in meeting deadlines and commitments especially in high-pressure situations.

● Demonstrated professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.

● Well-developed IT skills including email management, word processing, spreadsheets, database and electronic file management.

● Ability to engage and communicate with a broad range of people.

● Ability to work as part of a team.

● Excellent oral and written communication skills with attention to detail.

● Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple and competing work tasks in a fast-paced working environment.

Employment conditions:

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27 which include:

● A commencing salary between $76,910 and $89,793 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.

● An additional optional allowance ​of up to $27,865​ may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work and any travel requirements.

● Travel Allowance payable Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).

● An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

● An initial probationary period of three months may apply and may be subject to extension.

● The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check.

● Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.

● The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards
