Job Description
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Nurse provides care to a neonate with a wide-range of
Ailments, from common neonatal disease conditions to life-threatening illnesses. NICU patients are usually unstable and require constant monitoring and interventions. NICU Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.
Position Responsibilities:
In addition to basic nursing care, carries responsibilities in collaboration with the Senior Nurse Executive-NICU which includes (but are not limited to):
Daily activities:
1. Provides culturally appropriate care to patient.
2. Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
3. Takes handover from the outgoing staff based on the allotment of patients.
4. Takes inventory of the area instruments and articles as per the responsibility allotted by the Lead Nurse specialist.
5. Reports to the Lead Nurse Specialist/ Specialist or Senior Nurse Executive problem faced in caring and safety of the patients.
6. Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, such as ventilators and other biomedical equipments used for the care of the patients.
7. Takes responsibility in maintaining the equipments to the best of usage and reports to higher authority if breakdown happens.
8. Prepares, administers and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments as per hospital policy (High risk High Alert /LASA medication, Narcotic Policy and Verbal order policy).
9. Assists treating consultant during examination, treatment and procedures, which can include life-saving situations.
10. Analyzes lab results and reports as required to the concerned authority for faster treatment.
11. Provides education, information and emotional support to the patient’s family and caregivers based on the disease condition.
12. Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms as per the protocol of the hospital.
Weekly activities:
1. Maintains cleanliness of the unit in an orderly manner.
2. Collects store indents in the absence of Lead Nurse Specialist.
3. Initiates scrubbing and fogging of the patient rooms in case of notifiable disease.
4. Attend Continued Nursing Education conducted in house and out house as per the job requirement and specifications.
Monthly activities:
1. Checks for near expiry medications and replenish it with new stock.
2. Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting as described by the reporting authority and line of control in the hospital.
Depending on setting, may also:
Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent
Other Responsibilities :
1. Completes required orientation as directed by facility
2. Follows Cloud Nine safety rules and procedures while on assignment.
3. Follows Cloud Nine Codes for Unusual Occurrence Protocol.
4. Respects cultural and religious practices of patients.
5. Upholds Hospital Infection Control regulations
6. Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts
