Tairawhiti is one of the most beautiful, sunny regions of Aotearoa New Zealand. You will have opportunities to deepen your knowledge of Te Reo and Te Ao Maori and to play a key role in helping us become more responsive to the needs of tangata whenua.
As the hospital expands, further opportunities are anticipated in leadership, aeromedical retrieval, medical education, and EM outreach. The Emergency Department is provisionally accredited for ACEM training, with our first ACEM trainees commencing in January. We are also accredited for Rural Hospital Medicine Training.
Who we are
Gisborne Hospital is the primary healthcare facility for the East Coast of Aotearoa New Zealand.
115-bed teaching hospital with medical, surgical, paediatrics and womens health services
ED sees ~30,000 patients annually, with a 20% admission rate
16-bed department including 3 resus bays and 1 trauma bay
Onsite CT, MRI, and ultrasound, plus full laboratory support
Team of FACEMs, vocationally registered EM specialists, and urgent care doctors

Registration (or eligibility) with the Medical Council of New Zealand
Fellowship of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or equivalent
Proven experience managing high acuity, complex patients
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Commitment to clinical excellence and equitable care
NZ residency or eligibility for immigration
Applicants with expertise in paediatric emergency medicine or ultrasound are encouraged to contribute and grow as clinical leads in these areas
