About This Opportunity
Dog Caregivers play a key role in supporting the daily care of the dogs at Safe Haven. Shifts run three times daily at 8:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m., 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Each shift is approximately 2 hours, depending on volunteer coverage and the number of dogs in care. AARCS works hard to move dogs into foster or adoptive homes as quickly as possible; however, during busier periods, caregiver support is essential to ensure all dogs receive proper care and attention.
Dog Caregivers are responsible for providing basic daily care, which may include feeding, cleaning and disinfecting kennels, completing general shelter tasks related to the dogs (such as laundry and washing crates), and assisting with enrichment and walking the dogs in care.
Training for this role consists of three parts: an online training module, an in-person group training session, and a hands-on training shift with a Shift Lead to ensure volunteers feel confident and supported in the role.
Dog Caregiving is also a great opportunity to advance your dog handling skills. Volunteers can progress through our Basic Dog Handling and Advanced Dog Handling courses, which are required in order to walk dogs at AARCS and help ensure safe, positive experiences for both dogs and caregivers.
