Job Description
Education required: Bachelor's degree in education or a related field of study.
Education Preferred: Master's degree in education or a related field of study.
Experience Required: Experience with Federal or Tribal Indigenous programs and working with American Indian students.
Experience Preferred: Minimum of three (3) years in leadership with Federal or Tribal programs.
Other Requirements: The Director must possess extensive knowledge and experience with Indian Education programs, demonstrating an understanding of the unique educational and culturally related academic needs of American Indian students. They should also have a strong background in addressing the needs of underserved and low-income students, recognizing the socio-economic barriers that impact educational achievement and implementing strategies to mitigate these challenges. A proven track record of fostering a positive school climate and culture is essential, particularly in promoting inclusivity and respect. The candidate must be well-versed in best practices in student discipline, including alternatives to exclusionary discipline such as restorative justice practices, and have experience overseeing and ensuring compliance with discipline policies that prevent discrimination based on race, color, or national origin.
An in-depth understanding of Office for Civil Rights (OCR) agreements and the ability to implement and monitor compliance with such agreements related to student discipline and equity are critical. The candidate should be knowledgeable and capable of effectively responding to complaints regarding the district’s discipline policies and practices. Additionally, comprehensive knowledge of K-12 curriculum development, instructional strategies, and assessment practices for diverse student populations is preferred, along with experience in adapting curricula to meet the needs of students from various racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.
The candidate should have a thorough understanding of district, state, and federal policies related to Indian Education programs, as well as experience in state and federal grant application writing and administration, including program budget management. Strong leadership and project management skills are necessary, along with excellent organizational and facilitation abilities to guide teams and initiatives effectively.
The ability to create, enhance, and sustain relationships with internal and community stakeholders is vital. The candidate must have a history of working effectively with diverse groups, including those of varying ethnic, racial, and economic backgrounds, and demonstrate skills in building strong working relationships and resolving conflicts cooperatively. Exceptional oral and written communication skills are essential for effective interaction with various stakeholders, and experience in strategic planning and community engagement efforts is highly desirable.
Proficiency in using social media and advanced technology tools for communication and engagement is helpful, along with the ability to leverage technology to enhance educational practices and stakeholder involvement. The candidate must be committed to promoting and sustaining a positive school climate and educational achievement for students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Basic Function/Purpose of Position: The Director of Culture, Climate, and Indian Education will provide leadership and serve as a resource for the needs of indigenous students and their education. Provide leadership in effort to educate and advocate for diversity, equity, and intercultural competency at Rapid City Area Schools. Assist in creating an educational environment of inclusiveness, equity and respect for all people. Partnering with district leaders and principals to assess and monitor the district's progress towards attaining strategic goals and objectives. Provide support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for overseeing the Indian Education program; supporting the ongoing needs of participating families; ensuring compliance with Title VI program requirements; promoting the programs within the community; developing partnerships with local organizations and agencies; and preparing required supporting documentation and reports.
Starting pay $108,000 + depending on experience
