CRIME ANALYST - Police

JOB SUMMARY:

Under supervision, incorporate complex research methodologies, statistical analyses, and GIS mapping strategies to perform data reviews and analysis of crime reports. Interpret crime patterns and trends. Disseminate information and make recommendations related to possible suspects, potential crimes, locations of future crimes, and forecasting of future criminal events. Establish methods for other employees to obtain relevant crime information, reports, and maps. Perform other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


Incorporate complex research methodologies, statistical analyses, and GIS mapping strategies to perform detailed data reviews and analysis of crime reports.
Perform data analysis and reporting of crime statistics, trends, patterns and related police intelligence work by extracting and analyzing data regarding criminal subjects within the City.
Assist the Department in meeting objectives by monitoring, analyzing, and evaluating crime patterns and trends, and forecasting future criminal activity using statistical analyses and other analytical methodologies.
Analyzes crime trends based on raw data; creates maps of crime trends and traffic crash trends.
Compares performance measures with current crime and traffic trends to improve and maintain the safety of the City.
Conducts computer searches for suspects using vehicle information, phone numbers, suspect acquaintances, and/or addresses, formulates research methods for accurate reporting; researches and resolves discrepancies to ensure data integrity.
Prepare comprehensive analytical products such as reports, charts, graphs, tables, and maps, including summary reports and crime bulletins.
Maintain data files and tables in computerized systems.
Provide effective oral presentations and briefings; facilitate intelligence and crime analyst meetings.
Research, retrieve, and evaluate confidential information related to complex criminal investigations.
Proactively interact with members of the Department to communicate historical crime data, current crime trends/patterns, crime statistics, and forecast potential criminal activity.
Create automated files for others to use in originating reports; create databases, reports, spreadsheets, and maps for information management functions and distribution to all levels of the Department.
Develop and disseminate various administrative statistical reports and studies.
Interpret information regarding criminal activity in internal and external reports and databases.
Work with other law enforcement agencies to compile and exchange information on mutual crime subjects.
Responds to internal and external requests for information and records from police, operational and administrative staff.
Provide Department employees with objective analyses to assist in problem-solving and sector deployment.
Maintain awareness of new developments in the field of crime analysis and incorporate new developments as appropriate into programs.
Must not pose a threat to the health/safety of self or others.
Communicate courteously and effectively with other employees, officials, outside agencies, and the public.
Establish and maintain professional contacts with experts, analytical counterparts, educators and researchers; act as liaison with other agencies, departments, and citizens.
Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
Respond to requests for crime information from the news media, civic organizations, outside organizations, and the public.
Participate in training, and train Departmental employees in crime analysis functions.
Select appropriate methodology and procedures for effective completion of assignments and communication of results.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:

Bachelors Degree required in Research Methodology, Statistics, GIS, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, or related field. Degree can be replaced by documented successful completion of study in fields of research methodology, statistical analysis, and/or GIS mapping, plus 10 years law enforcement experience or any other relevant combination of education and relevant experience.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:

Must have knowledge of: academically accepted research and statistical analysis methodologies; GIS mapping processes and techniques. Must be computer literate with knowledge including relevant spreadsheet, graphic, mapping and network applications; word processing, the Internet and other computer software such as Windows, Power BI, Crystal Reports, databases, spreadsheets, word processing, records management systems, operating computer-aided dispatch systems, etc. Must be able to demonstrate how research methods, statistical analysis, and GIS mapping interrelate to produce relevant products. Must have skill in: gathering, recording, and organizing data; identifying and using potential sources of data; determining appropriate visual presentations of statistics or factual data; developing effective data collection procedure; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; maintaining accurate detailed records. Must have abilities to: apply relevant computer software to provide useful information; communicate effectively orally and in writing and preparing comprehensive reports; operate modern office equipment including, but not limited to desktop computer, fax machine, calculator, and copier; and understand detailed information through oral communication. Must be able to mentally focus throughout all assigned functions. Must be able to work well independently and within a team environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Lift and carry supplies weighing up to 30 pounds, e.g., computer paper, laptop, printer, etc., a distance up to 100 feet. Bend and stoop as necessary to set up computer, projector, and other necessary equipment for presentations.
