Metropolitan South Region is seeking applications for dedicated and passionate individuals to join the region as a Community Education Counsellor (Identified). The Community Education Counsellor (Identified) will be based at schools in the Logan area and be supported to lead an ******** improvement agenda in closing the educational disparity gap and to co-create culturally responsive primary schools with high expectations and aspirations for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. This is a Full-time Temporary role, until 21 January 2026 unless otherwise determined.

About The Role

Community Education Counsellors (CEC's) have been an integral component of the Queensland Department of Education for more than 50 years. They are dedicated professionals who offer educational counselling and support to identified schools, with the primary aim of ensuring Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, their families and their communities have access to the tools and services required to experience success in their academic journey. Embracing the principles of Equity & Excellence, CEC's walk alongside school leaders, valuing culture and creating inclusive teaching and learning environments whereby all students have equal access to education and learning, education settings are inclusive and accessible and the voices of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, community and stakeholders are valued.

Responsibilities Include

Provide educational counselling and support services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and students across a number of schools.
Participate in the development of activities, in and out of school, likely to enhance the involvement in education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families.
Develop and undertake support service programs designed to meet the needs of the school/s that will encourage the educational participation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and students.

Mandatory Requirements for an Identified Role:  

It is a genuine occupational requirement for Identified roles that the position be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person as set out in Section 7 of the  Anti Discrimination Act 1++1  for the purposes contained in Section 25 of that Act.  

Verification of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Island heritage  

For administrative purposes, in relation to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is either:  

of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; 
accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.  


By definition a person who is not an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cannot be employed (on any basis) to perform the duties of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.  

Applicants to this position may have to provide confirmation of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage. Requesting proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage from applicants helps to make sure that this intention is honoured.
