Hours of work: Full time, Monday to Friday, business hours

About the role:

Take the lead in managing the Psychogeriatric Unit (PGU) at Rimu Park - the only facility of its kind north of Auckland, providing specialized care for up to 20 residents at D6 level. This pivotal role involves full oversight of the PGU, including staff leadership, resource management, and ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality nursing and clinical care. Your experience as a Registered Nurse in Mental Health settings will be essential for this position.

As the PGU Clinical Coordinator, you will be responsible for maintaining continuity of care, meeting all contractual and legal obligations, and fostering a supportive, person-centered environment. You will also serve as the key liaison with Te Whatu Ora, ensuring effective communication and collaboration to support resident wellbeing and service excellence.

Duties include:

Provide overall leadership and coordination of the PGU, including induction and orientation of new staff.
Oversee the PGU activities programme to ensure meaningful engagement for residents.
Lead the restraint minimisation portfolio, promoting a safe and respectful care environment.
Represent the PGU at Health and Safety meetings and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
Participate in internal audits to maintain compliance and quality standards.
Complete all interRAI assessments for PGU residents in a timely and accurate manner.
Report regularly to the Facility Manager and Clinical Nurse Manager on PGU operations and issues.
Prepare and facilitate Doctor’s rounds, ensuring clinical information is up to date and accessible.
Collaborate with the Psychiatry for Older People (POPS) team during weekly visits.
Manage all communication with families and staff across all shifts, fostering transparency and trust.
Ensure timely and effective communication with Te Whatu Ora.
Maintain appropriate staffing levels and allocations using the staff hours calculator.
Ensure all contractual and organisational reporting requirements are met within required timeframes.
Support performance reviews and professional development of PGU Healthcare Assistants.

Skills and Experience:

Previous experience with Mental Health patients/residents is essential
Leadership experience as a clinical coordinator, unit coordinator or as senior nurse
Current APC
Skills in managing agitation or confusion in a calm manner
Working knowledge of the Mental Health Compulsory Assessment and Treatment Act 1992
InterRai training and experience in assessing cognitive function and behavioral changes.
Management and administration skills
Proficiency in clinical administrative software system, electronic health records and general IT tools
People skills, with empathy for the elderly and their families
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
