Full job description
Classification: ANU Officer 5/6 (Research)
Salary package: $83,351 - $+7,+2+ per annum plus 17% superannuation
Term: Full time, Fixed term (until 1 June 2028)

The Position

This is a dedicated role for an experienced and passionate Biodiversity Field Officer to conduct high-quality field-based data collection, with a focus on conducting high-level floristic surveys, as well as soil and biomass sampling in the critically endangered box-gum grassy woodlands in south-eastern Australia in the Riverina, Central tablelands and South East regions of NSW.

The Opportunity

We’re seeking a skilled and passionate Ecologist/Field Officer with strong botanical expertise to join a three-year fixed-term project supporting the re-emergence of cultural burning in south-eastern Australia.

This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside First Nations communities, government agencies, land managers, and research ecologists to monitor the ecological impacts of cultural burning. The role will lead high-quality floristic surveys and ecological assessments—including soil and biomass monitoring—within Box-gum grassy woodland communities across the Riverina, Central Tablelands, and South East NSW.

We’re looking for someone with excellent native plant identification skills, especially in temperate grassy ecosystems, and proven experience in ecological fieldwork. The role is full-time and field-based, requiring a self-motivated individual who is comfortable working independently across large and often remote rural landscapes.

This position is based in rural NSW, with the ideal candidate residing in or near Wagga Wagga, Young, Tumut, Temora, Yass, or Cowra.

You’ll collaborate with diverse cross-cultural partners and contribute to a research program led by the Fenner School of Environment and Society, delivering science-based insights that support both cultural and ecological restoration.

For further information about the position please contact Dr Elle Bowd, Research Fellow, E: elle.bowd@anu.edu.au.
