The Role
The APS 6 Policy Support Officer will work in the Strategy and Policy Directorate in the Mental Health and Wellbeing Branch. The Directorate is responsible for driving and contributing to Defence Enterprise strategies and policies that embed mental health and wellbeing considerations into broader Defence decision making.

The Policy Support Officer will be responsible for supporting the Directorate to develop these policies through extensive stakeholder engagement and collaboration. They will be part of an integrated workforce, reporting directly to the EL 1 of Policy.

The successful applicant will be navigating complex stakeholder environments, within relevant legislative frameworks and government decision-making and Defence’s strategic direction and policy requirements.

About our Team
The Mental Health and Wellbeing Branch was recently established to align mental health and wellbeing programs, policies and services across the Defence enterprise.

The Branch comprises military members and civilian employees. We are growing into an inter-disciplinary team focused on improving the mental health and wellbeing of the Defence community.

An important component of the Branch’s functions is to drive the implementation of the Defence and Veterans’ Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2026-202+, and all associated policies.

They should also have strong stakeholder management experience, where they will be able to manage, coordinate and influence objectives. They will work to understand the strategic implications ensuring successful internal and external communication. They will be required to contribute to reviewing and developing policy and support corresponding briefs, papers and communication associated with policy development.

The successful candidate will:

Have an understanding of Defence to ensure policy is relevant and linked with capability outcomes (desirable).
Have previous policy development experience, with a well-developed understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements (desirable).
Have well developed written and verbal communication skills.
Be able to engage in significant interactions with internal and external stakeholders to achieve quality outputs.
Be able to use initiative and work with limited supervision
Collaborate with other Branch Directorates to achieve Branch objectives and progress policy recommendations.
Encourage a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
