Job Description
We are seeking motivated Application Software Developers/Engineers at the Senior, Intermediate, and Junior levels to support the USDA National Agricultural Library (NAL) scientific research data applications. This position provides Operations and Maintenance (O&M) support and application development for scientific data platforms including GeoData (open-source software), Ag Data Commons (SaaS platform with local data harvests), and related scientific research data products.
The ideal candidate will have experience developing modern web applications, designing microservices, supporting scientific data repositories, and working within Linux-based environments using open-source technologies.
Task and Duties:
Provide Operations and Maintenance (O&M) support for NAL scientific research data applications.
Design, develop, and maintain microservices supporting scientific data ingest, processing, and data egress.
Develop and maintain system architecture documentation, API specifications, technical diagrams, and data models.
Support application enhancements, software updates, testing, troubleshooting, deployment, and production releases.
Configure and maintain SaaS application environments, including application configuration updates and data migration activities.
Develop repository reporting dashboards and analytics for scientific repository usage and statistics.
Design and implement RESTful APIs supporting internal and external integrations.
Develop and execute testing protocols, quality assurance (QA) processes, automated testing, and UI testing.
Support ETL processes and data migration activities for application modernization efforts.
Ensure applications comply with federal accessibility standards, including Section 508 and WCAG 2.x AA requirements.
Troubleshoot production issues and provide technical support throughout the software development lifecycle.
Participate in Agile development activities including sprint planning, code reviews, and technical documentation.
Collaborate with federal stakeholders, developers, data managers, and system administrators to deliver high-quality software solutions.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
Minimum 5 years of professional experience developing customized applications.
