Full job description
The Kaiako is responsible for delivering high-quality, kaupapa Māori-based teaching and learning within the Mahinga Kai – Te Hoata (Kaupae 3) programme. The role supports ākonga to develop knowledge and practical skills in Māori food production, harvesting, management, kaitiakitanga, māra kai, food preparation, and sustainable resource practices while strengthening connections to whenua, whānau, hapū, and iwi.
Key Responsibilities

Deliver engaging and culturally responsive learning experiences aligned with approved programme and course outcomes.

Facilitate practical and theory-based learning in areas including māra kai, kohinga kai, whakarite kai, kaitiakitanga, whanaungatanga, and rangatiratanga.

Assess student achievement and provide timely feedback in accordance with programme assessment requirements.

Maintain accurate student records, attendance, and achievement data.

Support ākonga success through effective pastoral care and academic guidance.

Engage with local iwi, hapū, whānau, and community partners to support authentic, place-based learning.

Contribute to programme quality assurance, moderation, and continuous improvement activities.

Uphold tikanga Māori, health and safety requirements, and organisational policies in all aspects of delivery.

Skills and Experience

Strong knowledge and experience in mahinga kai, mātauranga Māori, environmental stewardship, and/or primary production.

Demonstrated ability to work within kaupapa Māori and tikanga Māori frameworks.

Experience teaching, facilitating, mentoring, or working with adult learners is desirable.

Strong communication, relationship-building, and organisational skills.

Ability to work collaboratively with whānau, hapū, iwi, and community stakeholders.

Qualifications

Relevant qualification and/or equivalent experience in mahinga kai, horticulture, environmental management, mātauranga Māori, or a related field.

Adult education or assessor qualifications are desirable (or willingness to obtain).

Hours
This is a part-time position with flexible hours, including classroom, practical, and community-based learning activities as required.
The successful applicant will be passionate about advancing Māori food sovereignty, environmental sustainability, and the transmission of mātauranga Māori to future generations.
