Primary objective
Contribute to the delivery of a culturally appropriate health care service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients by
providing a liaison service within Royal Darwin Hospital/Palmerston Regional Hospital. Ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people have access to information in relation to health services by support and assisting patients who are accessing appointments
or services within Royal Darwin/Palmerston Hospital.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander outpatients are seen by relevant health professionals by providing a reception

service at the front entrance of the hospital, including liaising with a range of health, accommodation and transport services
both internal and external to Top End Health Services.

2. Provide a referral role to staff at Royal Darwin Hospital/Palmerston Regional Hospital and outside agencies to ensure Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander patients can access welfare, counselling and advocacy services in a culturally appropriate manner.

3. Ensure accurate records are maintained for departmental purposes through relevant data collection and appropriate record
keeping.

4. Contribute to the unit by taking part in relevant meetings, business planning, quality improvement activities, by attending
personal development activities, working as a team member and promoting the service to other staff.

5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

6. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven ability to engage and interact effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from diverse cultures in

remote and urban locations.
2. Proven knowledge and awareness of cultural and cross-cultural issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in

today’s society in health and wellbeing.
3. Demonstrated high level of communication and reception skills relating to liaising with health professionals and advocating

effectively with and on behalf of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families in a culturally appropriate
manner.

4. Demonstrated effective personal and interpersonal skills have well developed oral and written communication skills and
experience in using Microsoft computer programs and knowledge of administration computer systems.

5. Demonstrated ability to work as an effective front counter team member with minimal supervision, determining priorities,
organising daily workloads, and have a good knowledge of community services and how to access the services available in the
Top End.
