Details: The Community Safety, Policy and Programs Division is seeking a motivated and culturally knowledgeable Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander person to join the Justice Transformation and Community Safety Branch.
This role will provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate your strong cultural capability by working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and community representatives to play a role in facilitating culturally informed strategic policy outcomes, that strengthen community safety and emergency management in the ACT.
To be successful in this role, you will have strong cultural capability, stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to coordinate activities, communicate effectively, and work flexibly within a small, fast‑paced team. You will support engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, community and organisations to inform the ACT Government’s consideration of the Report of the Independent Review into the Over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in the ACT Criminal Justice System (the Jumbunna Review), the Board of Inquiry into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths in custody in the Alexander Maconochie Centre (the Board of Inquiry), and the development of culturally safe policies, projects and resources aligned to the ACT Disaster Resilience Strategy.
Key priorities for this position over the next 12 months include supporting:
Coordination, analysis and documentation related to supporting the ACT Government consideration of the Jumbunna Review.
Information gathering, engagement and documentation and briefing materials to support the Board of Inquiry into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander deaths in custody.
Engagement activities, partnerships and project coordination under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement, Disaster Resilience and Risk Reduction Project.
The inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and perspectives in the design of tools, resources and engagement processes.
The position contributes directly to Closing the Gap Priority Reform 1: Formal Partnerships and Shared Decision Making and Priority Reform 3: Transforming Government Organisations, and supporting ongoing commitment under the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement.
Eligibility/Other Requirements:
Background/Security clearance checks will be conducted.
This position does not require a pre-employment medical.
Notes: This is an Identified position in accordance with Section 27(4) of the Public Sector Management Act 1994 and is only open to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander lived experience and cultural capability is considered essential and therefore confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage may be requested. Evidence of Aboriginality or Torres Strait Islander descent may be required.
This is a temporary position available immediately until 31 December 2026 with the possibility of extension up to 12 months.
An order of merit will be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future identical vacancies over the next 12 months. This position is in a workplace designed for activity-based working (ABW). Under ABW arrangements, officers do not have a designated workstation/desk.
Opportunities for flexible working options could include hybrid working, being a combination of working from home, designated office based and FlexiSpace working locations across the ACT, part-time hours, job-sharing, flexible start, and finish times.
