The Opportunity

The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a Parliamentary Executive Level 1 Assistant Director, Communications and Media within Communications and Corporate Relations.


The role requires you to engage with many people across the Department of Parliamentary Services to ensure the Australian Parliament operates in an efficient, effective, and safe way. The role is within the department’s Communications and Media team which is responsible for managing the department’s internal and external communication, social media, intranet content management and media.


The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for delivering high quality internal and external communication and marketing activities.

We’re looking for a talented and creative communication professional who enjoys coming up with new ideas and implementing them to make a positive impact on a target audience. You’ll have excellent written communication skills, superior proofreading skills along with great leadership ability. If you’ve had experience conceptualising communication and media strategies and delivering results based on the strategies within a government context then please read on.


Job Specific Requirements:

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field are essential, as is proven experience over at least seven years leading the development and implementation of communication strategies.
You’ll also have to demonstrate good judgement and the ability to identify areas of opportunity and risk for the department.
The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

Immediate supervisor: Director, Communications and Media


Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the Parliamentary Executive Level 1 classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:


Managing and leading a small and dynamic team to develop and implement communication strategies and campaigns that reflect Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) priorities and strategic themes.

Providing direction and advice to support team members in their career development.

Supporting the implementation of strategic communications initiatives, including the development of key messages, internal communications activities, and other functions as required.

Work with the Communications Director to prioritise the team’s workload, ensuring seamless and effective internal and external messaging for DPS.

Develop and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders across Parliamentary Departments and internally, to support outcomes and business requirements.

As required, manage the development of design, advertising and other services, including procurement.

Contribute as required to other work of the communications team at DPS.


Employees of DPS are required to be able, and to be seen to be able, to provide professional advice and services to all Senators and Members without favour or prejudice.
