CBC Calgary is looking for a skilled, multi-platform storyteller able to tell the stories of Calgary. The successful candidate will be a strong journalist and creative thinker who brings original ideas and treatments to their stories, has an understanding of what works for social and streaming platforms and will have demonstrated skills in digital journalism. The role requires exceptional shooting and editing skills.
Under the direction of the Executive Producer or delegate, you will operate independently, or as part of a program unit to research, gather, package and present media for CBC’s platforms including streaming, online, TV, and radio. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices but there is latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity. You will be required to work a variety of shifts, often independently and without supervision.
You will contribute to Calgary’s legacy of original, enterprise and investigative storytelling and ensure we are talking about what matters most to people throughout Calgary. You’re innovative and will try new things, new workflows and new story treatments. You inspire others to do the same.
As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You will understand the diverse and changing population in Calgary and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
Graduation from University or Community College in a relevant course of study or equivalent industry experience.
Minimum 5 years directly related experience in a professional broadcast facility.
Passionate about Calgary – both stories and issues.
Minimum 2 years experience using Avid systems for non-linear editing
Minimum 2 years experience using broadcast cameras, as well as some experience gathering using an iPhone
Experience with remote transmission, using technologies like Dejero, Aspera and FTP
Comfortable and dynamic on-air presence.
Excellent interviewing and storytelling skills.
Ability to write clearly and concisely.
Ability to generate original story ideas and creative treatments.
Understanding of the changing expectations on social and streaming channels
Ability to work flexible hours.
Ability to work in a high-pressure, tight deadline, multi-platform environment, often in unexpected overtime situations.
Highly creative, imaginative, problem solver and motivated self-starter.
A natural interest and curiosity in current and emerging technologies and how they can support mobile/digital journalism.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
Must possess a valid driver’s license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company, other classes considered an asset.
