The Student Health Nurse is organizationally accountable to the Director, Counselling Accessibility and Health Services, in the division of Student Services at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. This position is clinically accountable to the Medical Health Officer (Public Health and Preventative Medicine Specialist), consultant for Saskatchewan Polytechnic. This position is further accountable to, and governed by medical regulatory and licensing bodies, including the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS); the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA); and the Ministry of Health in the province of Saskatchewan.

The Student Health Nurse is required to make quick, critical decisions regarding the health care and safety of Saskatchewan Polytechnic students, and, in emergencies, Saskatchewan Polytechnic staff/employees. The primary responsibility of this role is to independently immunize and complete turberculin skin tests for a large volume of students entering the health care profession.
• Provide health education and counseling on health issues and refer to appropriate resources as needed.
• Initiate and deliver health education and wellness.
• Be responsible for preparation and revision of health services procedures.
• Be responsible for ordering equipment and supplies for the health centre.
• Immunize students and staff as appropriate to their specific program. Recommendations will be based on current provincial guidelines and the most current issue of Canadian Immunization Guide. Immunization records will be maintained on all individuals immunized.
• Remain current in immunization knowledge and other areas of wellness promotion.
• Maintain a daily log of services provided.
• Maintain a working relationship with external resource professionals and agencies to promote easy access to consultation and assistance.
• Assess and provide treatment for minor injuries and illness, referring more serious injuries to medical attention.
• Report accidents to appropriate personnel, making recommendation when necessary.
• Complete appropriate insurance and compensation forms.
• Provide nursing care and/or health counselling for students’ minor illnesses and injuries.
• Initiate, and collaborate on the development, consistency, and implementation of standard operating procedures for the Student Health Nurse services on campus.
• Independently manage department procurement card, campus health office, health/medical supplies, patient files and documentation, health office statistics and reports as per provincial legislation and internal requirements.
• Develop, manage, deliver and execute required immunizations to all students in the School of Nursing and/or School of Health Sciences programs.
• Respond to, direct, and manage critical medical and/or psychiatric emergencies on campus.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE

Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities (QSA)

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

2. Minimum three years nursing practice of which two years are recent and relevant in community or employee health and wellness.

3. Eligible for registration or has active status with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS).

4. Has current knowledge of immunizations and understands the administration of routine immunizations.

5. Knowledge of infection control and occupational health.

6. Level “C” CPR certified and Level 1 (Basics) and Level II (Workplace Inspection and Accident Investigation) Provincial OHS Training.

7. Demonstrated competence and recent experience in the use of the internet, e-mail, MS Office Suite software and ability to learn and adapt to changing technology.

8. Ability to deliver and facilitate health promotion and/or wellness programs.

9. Effective communication (oral and written), interpersonal and public speaking skills.

10. Ability to work independently.

11. Demonstrates valuing diversity.
