Support NASA missions! The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and flight operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland. Learn more about our missions.

This position can support hybrid work (only one day in the office, every quarter). Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC WV). This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.

Position Overview:

We are looking for an experienced, energetic, enthusiastic, and motivated Senior Software Engineer to join our talented Data Management Division (DMD). The DMD is responsible for the processing, storage, retrieval, and archiving of astronomical data from many missions, including Hubble, James Webb, Roman, and TESS. This position will focus on developing software for our JWST Data Processing Pipelines.

Key Responsibilities:

- Design and Development: Create software systems for the pipeline (familiar with workflow managers such as Airflow, HTCondor, or others) processing of astronomical data.

- Interface Maintenance: Develop and maintain interfaces between databases and data processing systems.

- Algorithm Refinement: Refine and improve processing algorithms and performance for science programs.

- Operational Support: Operational Support: Lead in troubleshooting and debugging issues, support day-to-day operations, and resolve production problems in a timely manner.

Experience, Skills, and Qualifications:

- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or an equivalent relevant field.

- Experience: 8+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering and data management.

- Programming: Proficient in Python.

- Database Knowledge: Experience with relational databases.

- Operating Environment: Experience working in a Linux-based environment.

- CI/CD: Experience with Continuous Integration and Delivery (CI/CD) practices.

Nice to have: Cloud Services: Familiarity with AWS services including S3, EC2, Lambda, EKS/ECS, SQS, SNS, RDS, and other data-related cloud services.

The starting position and salary are commensurate with education and experience. Salary range is $137,500 - $147,500. Compensation is commensurate with education and experience. Our excellent benefits include:
