Job description
Plumbing is a designated trade in Alberta.
Being designated means that there are regulated standards that must be met and foreign candidates must have their credentials assessed and approved in order to work as a journeyperson.
Plumbers plan, install and service plumbing systems, fixtures, piping equipment and controls. These piping systems may be used to transport water, waste, gases or hot liquids.
DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:
• Study the building plans and specifications to determine the layout for the plumbing and other materials
• Locate and mark the positions for connections and fixtures
• Cut holes through walls and floors to accommodate pipes
• Select the type and size of pipe required and measure, cut, thread, bend, clamp, solvent cement or solder pipe
• Assemble and install valves and fittings
• Join pipe sections and secure them in position
• Test pipe systems for leaks
• Install underground storm sanitary and water piping systems
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Physically fit, able to bend, stretch and kneel
• Able to handle heavy loads
• Able to adapt to changing priorities and tasks
• Ability to manage time, think critically and troubleshoot
FOREIGN NATIONAL WORKERS - WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Foreign national workers who are experienced tradespeople can participate in the Trades Qualifier - Work Experience program to apply to receive certification in an Alberta-designated trade. This certification allows international workers to legally in their trade.
• Completion of secondary school
• A minimum of 72 months (6 years) AND 9360 hours of work experience
• A successful theory exam
• An Employer Declaration Letter
