Prescription of Corrective Lenses: Determine the appropriate prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses based on the examination results. Help patients choose suitable frames, lenses, or contact lenses and provide guidance on proper usage and care.
Refraction: Perform refraction tests to determine the refractive errors of patients, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Use phoropters or trial frames to refine the prescription and improve visual acuity.
Contact Lens Fitting: Assess the suitability of patients for contact lens wear and fit them with the appropriate lenses. Provide instructions on insertion, removal, cleaning, and maintenance of contact lenses. Monitor the health of the cornea and ensure proper fitting to prevent complications.
Management of Eye Conditions: Identify and manage common eye conditions such as dry eye syndrome, conjunctivitis, allergies, and minor eye infections. Prescribe medications, recommend treatments, or refer patients to ophthalmologists or other specialists when necessary.
Pre- and Post-operative Care: Provide pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing eye surgeries, such as cataract surgery or laser vision correction. Assess patients' suitability for surgery, educate them about the procedure, and monitor their recovery and visual outcomes.
Health Promotion and Education: Educate patients on proper eye care practices, preventive measures, and lifestyle choices that promote good eye health. Raise awareness about the importance of regular eye examinations and early detection of eye diseases.
Equipment and Inventory Management: Maintain and calibrate optometric instruments and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition. Manage inventory of eyeglass frames, lenses, contact lenses, and other optical supplies.
Collaboration: Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including ophthalmologists, opticians, and primary care physicians, to provide comprehensive eye care and ensure appropriate referrals and follow-ups.
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including examination findings, prescriptions, treatments provided, and recommendations for future care.
