The NSW Minister for Police and Counter-Terrorism, the Hon Yasmin Catley MP, invites applications from candidates who wish to be considered for appointment to the office of NSW Commissioner of Police.


About the Role

The Commissioner is CEO of the NSW Police Force, which includes 22,704 staff and an annual operating budget of $5.661B. The Commissioner is responsible for:

Leading and directing the NSW Police Force, as a highly professional policing service
Advising the Minister and key stakeholders on strategic direction, priorities and implementation in relation to community safety and law enforcement
Fulfilling responsibilities under the Police Act 1++0 and other relevant legislation
Working collaboratively with other emergency agencies to plan, prepare and respond to incidents, emergencies, events and operations.
The position requires comprehensive knowledge and understanding of corporate and government strategies and priorities affecting the NSW Police Force; substantial leadership skills and experience; and demonstrated capacity to lead multi-disciplinary teams in an environment of change through collaboration across multiple agencies.

The successful applicant will understand the unique role of leading the largest law enforcement service in the country and the responsibility of upholding the high standards of Australian policing recognised throughout the world.

The role encompasses not only being the State’s foremost Police Officer, but also the leader and efficient manager of a complex organisation with significant human and capital resources.

The successful applicant will:

Meet the integrity requirements for appointment as specified in the Police Act 1++0
Possess relevant tertiary qualifications and/or post graduate qualifications and/or equivalent experience
Bring high level commercial, business and political acumen
Demonstrate a commitment to building public confidence in the NSWPF through transparency and accountability, and a working knowledge of the role and functions of the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of corporate and government strategies and expertise in governance, financial, planning and HR strategic frameworks to support organisational success
Have the capability to lead proactive crime reduction initiatives based on efficient, effective and intelligence-based policing, with sound knowledge of current sensitive social issues affecting policing
Possess superior communication, consultation and negotiation skills, including the ability to advise and engage at executive levels of government, private sector and the community and present to a range of audiences, including media
Demonstrate the ability to identify, assess, prioritise and control health and safety risks
Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of communities and strategies to meet needs that arise
Possess a strong law enforcement background and proven leadership capacity managing large and complex agency/ies.


Applicants must also demonstrate relevant capabilities under the NSW Government’s capability framework. The initial appointment will be for a period of up to 5 years.
