The Legal Services Department is responsible for providing legal advice and services with respect to all of the City’s activities including conduct of real estate and corporate/commercial transactions, litigation and by-law prosecutions, claims/risk management, by-law drafting and statutory interpretation, contracts, procurement, labour and employment law and other areas specific to municipal corporations.
Under the general supervision of a lawyer at Legal Services, as the Law School Summer Student you will amongst other things:
Work on files within Legal Services’ Litigation practice team;
Meet with client departments and the supervising lawyer to obtain instructions and gather information;
Review, summarize and track City records;
Conduct research; and
Create memorandums of law.
Your education and qualifications include:
Current enrollment as a 1L, 2L, or 3L student of an LLB or JD program;
Excellent organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
Ability to establish effective and maintain working relationships with various stakeholders; and
Ability to work professionally with confidential material in a confidential environment.
Ability to conduct research using physical and electronic research tools;
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including explaining technical and legal information in plain language and preparing reports and legal documents.
IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada. Conditions of employment:
The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
