THE OPPORTUNITY
The Labourer – Eco Centre performs manual work, operates vehicles and minor equipment in accomplishing all operations and maintenance tasks assigned in delivering the programs at the Eco Centre. The incumbent will perform all tasks directly related to and in support of core operations and maintenance programs required to support solid waste management and recycle operations. Much of the work will be physical assistance to coworkers, comprised of tasks including but not limited to the use of hand tools, small power tools and light equipment. This position reports to the Supervisor of Waste Programs.
This is a temporary full-time position for up to three (3) months. This position is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).
The hourly rate for this position is:
Probationary Rate: $21.71 per hour
Developmental Rate: $23.33 per hour
Qualified Rate: $24.+6 per hour
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Manual Labour
Carry out assigned tasks in accordance with instructions as provided by supervisor or designate.
Participate in site safety inspections.
Assist Eco Centre staff with assembly, repair and delivery of waste collection carts.
Assist Eco Centre staff with facility maintenance and cleaning including spilled materials, snow and ice and general house keeping.
Ensure equipment and vehicles are maintained in a clean condition.
Assist with customer service needs.
Perform other materials management tasks such as moving appliances, batteries and Styrofoam bags.
Work with household hazardous waste materials in compliance with established procedures.
2. Equipment Operation
Deliver, repair and collect carts using vehicle assigned to that task.
Snow removal in Eco Centre yard using snow thrower, backpack blower, shovel and/or hand brooms.
Yard maintenance consisting of loose debris management, yard sweeping, litter pick using hand tools and appropriate powered equipment.
Inspection and minor maintenance of tools equipment and/or vehicles.
3. Documentation
Maintain basic Eco-Centre records.
4. Other Duties
Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors.
Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the “Values, We Live By”.
All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory.
Employee are expected to stay current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures.
Complete training and development provided to improve or increase individual competencies related to position responsibilities.
Perform other job-related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum of one (1) year related experience in recycling and hazardous waste disposal.
Experience working with the public in a direct customer service capacity.
Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of this position.
Ability to support decisions and recommendations with clear reasoning and accurate, relevant information.
Experience with providing excellent customer service by addressing complaints and inquiries with professionalism and sensitivity to individual needs.
Ability to work as a team member and independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to operate the equipment required of the position.
Knowledge of the methods, practices and rules for the safe operation of assigned tools, vehicles and equipment.
Basic awareness of occupational hazards and controls applicable to the work.
Willing and able to complete in-house training requirements in all applicable areas of operations.
Experience using mobile devices such as tablet.
Basic knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word.
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
First Aid Certification.
Municipal experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Class 5 Driver’s License.
Must obtain a satisfactory review of a three-year Driver’s Abstract, with a maximum of six demerits.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Monday to Saturday.
40 hours per week.
Overtime may be required.
Requires work outdoors in all conditions, working in an office environment, working in shop work bays and in proximity to active vehicular traffic.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stairs, kneeling, manual dexterity, visual acuity/color vision.
Climbing ladders, balancing, crawling, crouching, depth perception/night, lifting, pushing, reaching (both arms), use of feet (for control), pulling, outside work.
Lifting to 20kg (44lbs).
