Laboratory Assistant
The Laboratory Assistant plays a vital support role in the clinical laboratory by handling and processing specimens, loading samples onto instruments, and assisting with general laboratory workflow. This role works under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist and contributes to maintaining accurate and timely testing procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision and direction of a Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist, the Laboratory Assistant may perform the following duties:
Properly route, handle, and process a variety of medical specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols
Batch and prepare samples prior to instrument loading or handoff to technical staff
Load patient samples and quality controls onto automated laboratory instruments
Assist in notifying clients of critical values per laboratory policy and ensure appropriate documentation
Archive specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and dispose of them according to specimen retention policies
Monitor LIS backlogs at least every 30 minutes to identify and escalate delayed priority samples
Adhere to all laboratory policies, procedures, safety guidelines, and quality assurance standards
Support laboratory staff with miscellaneous tasks as needed to ensure smooth operation
May be required to work weekends, holidays, overtime, or split shifts based on operational needs
Perform other job-related duties as assigned by management
REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or GED required
Associate of Science or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university preferred
Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred
Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures
Proficient with laboratory computer systems, analyzers, and communication tools
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform repetitive movements (e.g., pipetting, specimen handling)
Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate laboratory instruments and process specimens
Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment while maintaining accuracy
Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions
ability to manage stress and remain professional when dealing with urgent or sensitive matters
