Position Summary:
Reporting to the Communications Officer, Faculty of Arts, this position supports digital communications across the units of the Faculty, primarily by developing and coordinating the execution of digital content production plans, creating English-language content, optimizing images, and building menus and layouts for McGill websites. Working closely with site owners, web designers, developers and other communications specialists, the incumbent will implement recommendations for content and site optimization using McGill's central web content management system.
Primary Responsibilities:
Participate in client consultations to collect content requirements, assess specifications, and plan work on new and existing websites.
Assist in developing content strategies to increase web usability, overall content reach and adherence to current digital standards and best practices.
Administer the execution of digital content plans.
Build and refine site menus, layouts, and blocks using site building tools (training provided).
Create, revise, and/or optimize text for user comprehension and search referencing.
Collaborate with content optimization and marketing specialists to define and implement best practices for writing tone and style.
Perform audits of web usability, content performance and compliance with branding standards and other guidelines (accessibility, translation, SEO, etc.).
Document bugs, issues, resolutions, testing results, etc. in tracking tools such as JIRA and Confluence.
Provide website administrators with the support they need to implement best practices and optimize their content, including individual/group training, workshops and coaching.
Create and enter content for email newsletters and online ads.
Review data collected by user tests, Google Analytics, Facebook, Envoke (email marketing) and other tools
Research, crop or resize photos and liaise with Multimedia or Graphic Design Services for video, graphical, or audio content
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
Strong understanding of web writing and usability principles
Proven experience writing effective web copy
Experience building or maintaining websites using the administration interface of CMS like Drupal and WordPress
Good understanding of HTML and CSS
General aptitude for learning complex user interfaces and technical tasks
Ability to stay abreast of evolving best practices, policies, and institutional standards for site and content management
Excellent command of written and spoken English. Spoken French.
Understanding of Agile project management principles, an asset
Experience working in public relations, marketing, or higher education, an asset
Experience working in email marketing, promotional writing, content optimization (SEO), and/or photography, an asset
Experience in editing/creating multimedia content (visual, video, audio)
