ABOUT THE ROLE | Te tūranga mahi
As a Data Engineer within our Digital team at Port of Auckland, you'll be at the heart of enabling data-driven decision-making across the business. From designing modern data models and building scalable data pipelines, to promoting self-service data access, this is a hands-on technical role with real business impact.
You'll join a collaborative and agile team who are passionate about data and innovation. No two days will look the same — you'll be:
Designing, building, and optimising data pipelines using modern tools like Azure Data Factory, Snowflake, and DBT.
Driving re-usable, modular data engineering assets that support consistent and scalable data use.
Supporting data integration from a wide variety of sources — including APIs, flat files, and databases.
Champion secure and responsible data engineering practices to promote reliable and resilient data driven decision making.
Monitoring pipeline performance and ensuring cost-effective cloud usage.
Embedding data governance practices (quality, integrity, documentation, version control).
Participating actively in Agile ceremonies — stand-ups, retrospectives, and sprint planning.
Supporting business users in accessing data in a self-service and timely fashion.
Collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to understand business needs.

ABOUT YOU | Ko wai koe
We're looking for someone who's deeply experienced in data engineering - with the technical toolkit and collaborative mindset to make a real difference. You'll thrive if you enjoy solving complex problems, working across platforms, and bringing data to life.
You'll also bring:
4+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering or a related field.
Expertise in SQL and scripting languages like Python or Bash.
Experience with modern data platforms such as Azure Data Factory, Snowflake, or similar.
Familiarity with orchestration tools and CI/CD pipelines.
A background in Computer Science or related discipline.
Strong experience with data modelling and data integration methods.
Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
An interest in mentoring and supporting team members.
Awareness of data privacy, security, and compliance principles.
Bonus if you have experience with DataOps and tools like Alteryx or Talend.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES | Ngā Haepapa Matua
Build, maintain, and optimise scalable data pipelines and ETL workflows.
Design and embed robust data models and reusable data engineering assets.
Support business users to access data for effective, timely decision-making.
Collaborate across teams to align data initiatives with business strategy.
Monitor cloud usage and ensure resource efficiency.
Apply best practices in data governance, security, and documentation.
Participate in agile delivery practices and continuously improve engineering processes.
Help establish a community of data practice and uplift data maturity across POAL.
