About the Role
This exciting opportunity is for a Chief Legal Officer to lead and manage Sonder's legal team, driving the delivery of legal services and resources to achieve our strategic goals. The successful candidate will oversee corporate transactions, including fundraising, secondary sales, and employee equity plans, as well as establish and maintain a robust legal contract management system.
The role involves advising on product delivery in areas such as privacy, data protection, risk, and compliance, while proactively monitoring regulatory changes and educating the leadership team and broader business. As Company Secretary, you will ensure compliance with governance obligations and provide critical support to the Board Chair and CEO.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee the delivery of legal services and resources to support company goals, strategies, and priorities.
Provide expert guidance to the executive leadership team on contracts, regulatory compliance, litigation risks, intellectual property, business structure, and employment law.
Work closely with the Executive team to complete corporate and corporate finance transactions.
Lead the negotiation, drafting, and management of legal contracts and agreements with third parties, ensuring alignment with business objectives and mitigating legal risks.
Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards across Australian and international jurisdictions.
Act as the Company Secretary, coordinating Board meetings, maintaining statutory records, and ensuring compliance with governance obligations.
Advise on data protection and privacy matters, and educate the business on compliance obligations.
Support corporate governance processes and procedures as necessary to ensure compliance with relevant legislative requirements.
Requirements
A minimum 8+ years' experience as a qualified lawyer with previous experience in-house in a fast-growth environment.
Strong background in corporate commercial law.
Experience in corporate law, SaaS, employment law, data privacy, technology and IP law.
A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (or equivalent), with an unrestricted Australian practicing certificate.
Knowledge of the healthcare sector and its regulations is helpful but not essential.
Ability to thrive in a high-growth environment.
A strong ability to weigh risks and commercial considerations to achieve practical and risk-weighted outcomes.
