PHS Community Services Society (PHS) is hiring Cooks for our Food Program!
Would you enjoy working with community in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES)? Are you interested in a job where you can make an impact on the well-being of others? If this is you, PHS invites you to apply for the role of Food Program Cook.
The PHS Food Program plays a crucial role in promoting a healthy sense of belonging. Residents of the DTES are often underfed and malnourished. It is essential that the Food Program staff provide close attention to proper food preparation and portioning, while also being attentive to specific dietary requirements or restrictions.
PHS is recognized as North American leaders in low barrier housing and harm reduction services. We are innovators, highly regarded across the sector, looking for people to join experienced, supportive multi-disciplinary teams. We’re looking for people who work hard, think on their feet, and operate seamlessly as part of a team.
Responsibilities for the role include (but are not limited to):
Develop creative ways of serving food in a non-institutional manner.
Provides creative menu planning and cooking methods for preparing and serving food, serving meals efficiently, hot, and on time.
Maintaining the kitchen ordering, receiving and the safe storage of meats, produce and staples.
Checking food orders for accuracy, following inventory control procedures for tracking and storing.
Keeps all cooking spaces and kitchen equipment clean, maintained and well organized.
Demonstrates safe food handling protocols, procedures while preparing and serving food.
Attend staff development training programs.
Contribute to and help maintain a respectful work environment, work supportively with Peer staff
Education and experience required:
The ideal candidate for this role has the following qualifications and skills:
You have 2-5 years’ experience in a commercial kitchen
Current CPR certification is a preferred asset
Current Food Safe certification is required
Class 5 Driver’s License is a preferred asset
Work experience with marginalized populations considered an asset.
An equal combination of education, training and experience is acceptable.
Terms of employment
Salary: $25.61 p/h, plus 10% pay in lieu of benefits
Job Type: Permanent, Casual
This is a unionized position under CUPE 5536.
Successful applicants will be required to complete a criminal records check.
